Flights are limited, public transport isn’t part of the picture, and car hire should be booked before you arrive. It takes a little effort, but that’s part of what keeps the island special.
Travelling with a group, planning a golf trip or coming for a surf getaway? Charter flights can be a good option, with some operators offering tailored services from mainland Australia. Commercial flights also run to the island, so check current routes and availability before locking in your plans.
Car hire: There’s no taxi service or rideshare on the island. Book your car hire in advance and pick it up at the airport.

Daily flights from Melbourne and Tasmania put King Island within an hour of the mainland Australia. Sharp Airlines flies from Burnie and Launceston, REX flies from Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine), and King Island Airlines operates from Moorabbin. Charter options are available too, for groups or anyone who’d rather fly on their own schedule.

Flying direct from Barwon Heads Airport in Victoria, King Island Surf Charters caters for small groups and individuals. With a fleet of four planes, they can help with anything from a quick day trip to a longer surf stay, including accommodation and car hire.

Based at Moorabbin Airport, Australian Air Safaris provides air charter services to King Island. They can also organise one or two-day stays, including tour activities and accommodation.
Short Stop Charters
Short Stop Charters operates two refurbished DC-3 aircraft, each seating 28 passengers. These iconic planes are regular visitors to King Island, where the flight itself is part of the experience. Departures leave from a private VIP lounge at Essendon Airport.
